Hello Again!

It was been a wild few months!

This past August, Andyhasaband & I embarked on one of the most wonderful tours I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of. We saw so many diverse parts of our country in just ten short days!

We enjoyed the beautiful city of Rochester, where we ate vegan "meatballs" with Tart Vandelay, visited the Twin Cities and hung around Bob Dylan's old stomping ground, enjoyed the beautiful lake in Lake Bluff, IL && visited the rolling hills of Thomas, West Virginia, (see above!) where we swam in a river with the most beautiful border collie I have ever met. Hitting the road with one of your life long friends is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. Making music with the people I love is truly the greatest gift I could ever ask for.

Upon my return, I was reunited with Wondertwins, AJ & Tom Del Negro, who have been performing in my band these last few months, for a show at The Iron Horse, where we opened for the wonderful Michael Sherry. Here we cheese in the Green Room, after a very successful show filled with hot jazz licks, mystical harmonies and LOADS of sass.

Said mystical Wondertwins & I decided, after celebrating our Virgo birthdays together, that we would do an album together. We shall begin work THIS WINTER. Hybernation mode activated! You can expect to hear our efforts in the spring.

Until then, you can get your fill of sass on my bandcamp, where every purchase these next few months will go toward funding the new project!

We've got a few shows coming up, where we will be playing new tunes, new arrangements of old tunes && so much more:

10/29 Franklin County Pumpkin Festival
11/6 The Wheelhouse
11/11 New City Brewery
11/21 Bishop's Lounge

&& Finally, in other news, The Franklin County Sweethearts would like to welcome the newest Sweetheart, PAPA SWEETHEART/Roscoe Samson/Junior Hotcakes to our cuntry music family. (I.e, Josh Allen, rock and roll photographer/boy wonder).  Side note: he built the drum that seats his bum by hand! Woah!

You can see our tasty new lineup at Luthier's Co-Op on November 18. Get ready to fill your beers with tears!

xoxo Weege

Hello Friends!

It has been an absolutely, mind-blowing couple of months! I have been enjoying the last month playing shows close to home, recovering from my journey across the country.

I spent all of April and May journeying alongside some of the folks I hold closest to my heart. I saw cacti for the first time (see above) reunited with my Honeycomb Suite bandmate Jake Clough in California (see precious photo below), camped in the desert (see bottom!), climbed the highest mountain in Arkansas and had so many life-affirming experiences all over our beautiful nation.  As a human who struggles with feeling lost and anxious at times, I found true peace in transit.
Picture

Which is why I decided I can't keep still for long and will continue on with my travels come next week. And well, won't really be stopping until the leaves change!

Next week, I hit the Green Mountain state with the Dire Honeys.

The first week of August, I am joined by The Franklin County Sweethearts, my collective country effort with Madeline Laporte & Tim Lebeau of The Jays. We will be in the northern New England states.

Hello friends! It truly has been awhile!

My beautiful and loyal steed, Georgia May, has taken what will most likely be her last ride this month. After about two years of touring, my Ford is ready to call it quits. That being said, I haven't been able to travel as much as I would like to this month. And that bites.

To raise funds for a new touring vessel, I added a few new things to the merch shop. In the spirit of all things DIY, you can now have handmade Max Candles. (Scented with essential oils!) There are also adorable coasters in the merch shop as well! Click here to buy shit.

This weekend we said fuck it and drove her down to NYC for a show at one of my all time favorite spots, Silvana.

When I loaded in my gear, an incredible jazz quintet was performing. HD Quintet consists of drums, bass, guitar, trumpet, bass and FLUTE. The flutists also doubled as the group's lead vocalist. She did a beautiful rendition on "Skylark." The band also played a great rendition of "Night In Tunisia," which will forever stand as my favorite jazz tune.

After a glass of delicious well whiskey I performed an hour set WHICH YOU CAN CHECK OUT HERE. A wonderful group, LIVAMP, filmed the show and posted it in its entirety on their website.

My good friend Caitlin Shea took some great photos from the show. To see more of her work, click here.

I had an awesome time in the city and will be returning on March 25 to perform at Rockwood Music Hall at 7pm!

Tour Part 3: Vermont, Rochester and NYC!

10/23/2015

After a few days off, I headed to Vermont, the promise land for us granolas. The first night I performed at Big Jay Tavern, a quaint ski lodge up near Canada! I had an incredible maple whiskey, got to whip out a few tunes I haven't in a while and was able to stay in a beautiful room over looking the mountain.

After a full day of hiking at Smugglers Notch and parts of Long Trail, I performed at The Radio Bean in Burlington in the evening . A band called Copilot opened up the evening. They are an awesome acoustic duo that features perfect harmonies, some percussion and a little harmonica too! Check em out here. Here is the duo covering some Dave Matthew's Band.

A few days later I drove about 5 hours to play in Rochester, NY at Press Coffee Co. I got to share the stage with one of my dearest fiends, Jon Lewis, whom I always try to see/play with when I come to the area. He opened up the night with some older tunes, but played mostly songs off of his newest release, "Panic Rock." The album sounds AWESOME by the way. So sparkly and clean! I like "Let It Slide." Listen here.
I played in the middle of the show and I was pleased to discovered that an incredible grand piano was waiting for me! It was perfectly tuned and all of the pedals were working! I closed my set on guitar, ending with Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry."
The headlining band was an absolutely mind-blowing duo called Tart Vandelay. The duo consists of percussion and vocals on a looper pedal, sometimes having four different vocal parts at once! There is also a guitar player, who looked like he was having the time of his life and shredding acoustic style. The duo had one song about how our generation is obsessed with computers, which really struck a chord with me. I invited the duo to come to Massachusetts so you all can see the magic for yourself this winter!
The show was truly one of my favorites of the journey. Jon and his wife Rachel sent me home with a bag full of apples they picked and some tea to get me through the rest of my travels. They are some of the kindest folks in all of New England! Photos courtesy of Jon and Rachel!

A few days later I arrived in New York once again, Harlem to be exact! I was playing at Silvana, which had a really sweet restaurant on the first level! In the basement was a music venue. The walls were white brick, there were really cool color-changing lights on the stage and the most beautiful woman I had ever seen behind the bar. There were a few tables in the front and couch-benches in the back with screens playing what was going on on the stage for those who couldn't see!
An unbelievably tight latin-jazz trio opened up the night. I love bossa music and I truly felt like I was transported to a much warmer place!
So many of my New York friends came, including my good friend Caitlin Shea, who took this video of my set. It's nice to see a familiar face when you are far from home. Here's some "Bang Bang."

Sweet Moon Tour Part Two: Midwest and Beyond!

After a few days of rest at home, I headed back out on the road on Sunday with my dear friend, and Honeycomb Suite bandmate, Jake Clough, also of Father, Misty and The Big Rock.

Our first night was in Boston at The Burren, where were shared the stage with a lovely folk duo called Cosby Gibson. The headlining act was an incredible band called Stains of a Sunflower, who absolutely blew my mind.

I sat on two beers (I have no idea how that happened), got to see so many of my Boston singer songwriter friends, and got to enjoy an incredible amount of awesome music. Below is my Boston BFF, Yona. She has a song she wrote about Cheese. Check it out here. First night of tour: fucking awesome.

The next night, Jake and I played at a Kava Bar in Ithaca NY. Kava is a "sacred root" that is ground up and consumed as a cold tea. It is said to have beneficial properties. It made me feel SUPER RELAXED.
The bar had a beautiful bronze tree that was built into the bar and had branches that stretched to cover the ceiling. If you look in the photo of Jake, Molly and I, you can sort of see it!
Picture

The next night we headed to the good ol' OH, where we played at Scribbles Coffee in Kent. We played to a packed room that consisted mostly of the local knitting club, who was knitting hats for the homeless. It was nice to see the cute little ladies bopping their heads to the beat while pearling!
We stayed with the Allens, who we gave a little concert to on the porch in the morning before we left. Here we are cheesing to the Max. That's Buddy next to Jake, one of the wildest, friendliest dogs I've ever met!
Picture
The next night we played in Michigan at an awesome coffee shop in Ypsi called "The Ugly Mug." Some of the nicest folks I've ever met to date. We went out for beers with the baristas post show.
Picture
We hit Chicago next, where we played at The Elbo Room. There was a nice chunk of people there. Jake played the cajon and sang on "The Road," which was magical! The bar had a pac man table, which is my weakness, and I proceeded to drop mad money into the damn machine. Despite that loss, we can be seen cheesing in the photo below with our Chicago friends!

The next night we played in Pittsburg, where we got to play outdoors on a beautiful patio.
After we checked into our quarters (we rented a dope house on AirBnB) we walked around and found a bar with music and a walk up beer window. There was an UNBELIEVABLE band playing in the bar called Three Car Garage and I got to sing "Me and Bobby" with them. You can smoke in bars in PA and beer is dirt cheap. We had an amazing fucking time even though our clothes smelled disgusting the next day.

Next came Philly! The pope was taking Philly by storm that weekend, (pope-pocolypse) so the show was ill attended, but we still had a great time! We made friends with a badass singer songwriter named Dave from Cleveland who plays in a band called C-Level. He did a dope cover of Aretha's "I Never Loved A Man," You can check them out here.

Our next night, we drove to New York City to perform at Rockwood Music Hall, where I've dreamt of playing for a long ass time! We played what I believe was our best set of the whole damn tour to a very attentive audience. I got to slam on a grand piano and enjoy A GREAT OLD FASHIONED.

We played a homecoming show at Bishop's Lounge the following night in Northampton, which was to be Jake's last show in our hood before he moves away. We were joined by his FMBR band mate Sam, who has the one of the most incredible voices I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

Sharing music with Jake all over the country has been a blast and I'm so proud of the songs he's been writing and all that he has accomplished. I fucking love you, man. Go check out his stuff in Father Misty and The Big Rock as well as our project together, Honeycomb Suite.

The morning after the Parlor Room show, Maddie & I headed up to New Hampshire to begin our tour! We were booked for a date at The Red Door, which is a super rad music lounge in Portsmouth. I had a dope burrito below the venue and I got to hear Maddie sans band, which was really beautiful. I always like to hear the paired down version of full band tunes. We met up with my beautiful cousin Carol, with whom we enjoyed some classy drinks. Carol had the strange, pink mystery beverage in the photo below. As always, I got a bangin Old Fashioned.
Picture
We weren't scheduled to be in Portland for a few hours, so we got to walk around by the water and met a badass dog named Cappy. Best. Dog. Ever.
Picture
Picture
We played at Local Sprouts Cafe in Portland Maine that evening, which was one of the most wonderful spots I've visited to date. We had delicious tempeh salads and SUPERB beers. I also got to bust out my guitar at this show and Maddie & I got to sing "Goodnight Irene," together, which is always a blast.
Picture
Our next stop was in Rhode Island IN A VINTAGE SHOP. We were joined by Maddie's band, Street Change, for this show, which was such a treat, as I got to borrow Tom Lebeau, who added some badass surf guitar to my set. We each got to take something from the shop home with us. Maddie got a sick velvet jacket, Tom got a delightful 70's dad shirt and I got a badass faux fur coat. But in all honesty, Nate walked away with the most amazing find of all: 90's geometric multi-colored pants. I'm seriously kicking myself for not getting a picture.

Here we are post set. Can you feel the friendship?

So it's been one crazy fucking month, that's for sure!
I turned 22, released my 7" vinyl "Sweet Moon," at the Parlor Room and have been on tour sense the release!

Where to begin?
Well, I arrived for soundcheck at The Parlor Room and Signature Sounds around 5pm on Sunday, September 13. I was absolutely jittery with nervous excitement. The moonshine helped.

Lisa Marie Ellingsen was scheduled to open the night and we had some beautiful moments in the green room together before the show. We both whipped out our guitars and ran through  "T For Texas" by Jimmie Rodgers and our nerves melted away. Lisa got the nod from the sound guy and it was time for the madness to begin.

She played a beautiful set, probably one of the best I have ever heard her do. Nobody plays like Lisa. Her solos are slick, bluesy and straight badass. Nobody sings like Lisa either. I love the way that at times, it sounds like she is whispering her stories; telling tales of love gone wrong and nightlife adventures. I'm always hanging on every word.

I have never in my life played a set that I am more proud of than the one I played that night. Being able to play with the True Believers was an honor, a privilege or more fun than you could possibly imagine. I play solo a lot, so when I get to play with a band, ESPECIALLY one as talented, hard working and straight up TIGHT as these guys, it's a party. The True B's consist of Aaron Borucki on guitar, Aaron Knapp on bass and Mike Benoit on drums.

There were so many amazing moments that night it's hard to single out a few. I will say that "Sweet Moon" was filled with delicious latin flair that night. "Jim Dandy," a tune I don't play very often, was treated with amazing cotton candy guitar and soft, thoughtful bass and drums. The band also added a new intensity to "Hotcakes," which was so fucking sick. Having drums, bass and guitar behind me made me feel like super woman!

I also got to play MY NEW GUITAR for the first time in front of people. I received a beautiful, Luna acoustic for my birthday, appropriately and unoriginally named "Luna." I played a the first half of the set with the band and took a break to play a few tunes solo in between. I reached for Luna and performed my new tune "The Road" totally solo. It was nerve-wracking, as I don't usually play guitar plugged in AND in front of people who were PAYING ATTENTION very often at all. I am happy to report that it went swimmingly and Luna shall become a fixture in live shows! Also during the solo portion of the show, I busted out "Twins" another tunes I never get to play. Before the band came back up, Aaron jumped joined me for "Can't Help Falling In Love," the Elvis classic. Our two voices sound really great together and it's always such a blast to sing a sappy tune with one of my favorite people.

One of the highlights of the evening was getting to bust out "Lovesick Woman." The boys NAILED all the weird stops. I think I am going to start including it in the set more too!

We closed to evening with the Beatles classic "Oh Darlin," which I have performed 1,000+ times in 1,000+ bars. Never in my life have I enjoyed playing it more. There was something in the air that night. The True Believers absolutely BROUGHT IT.

Seriously, thank you to everyone who helped make the release so awesome. Tour has been going amazingly well and will be writing about that very soon!

I played one final show Saturday before shit gets crazy next week and I was joined by none other than my best pal Andy Gould (of Andyhasaband and Funzzle) at Raven Hollow Winery in our hometown of Westfield.  Gould is one the the most entertaining songwriters I have ever had the pleasure of sharing the stage with. We split up the first half of the night with two short sets each and closed out the last portion of the night together, which was an absolute blast.

We played a tear-jerking rendition of "Falling Slowly", a few old country tunes and some of our separate original tunes. Andy sang a few verses of the "Gimmie Gimmie Blues," which was a sight to see. He even let me borrow his guitar for a few songs, which was fun! I've never really gotten to play one plugged in before, especially one as nice as his, and has inspired me to someday purchase an electric-acoustic of my own! One thing at a time...

The evening was a total blast and I look forward to harassing Andy into playing with me more. There are talks of Gould releasing a solo E.P but this chatter is unconfirmed. The second I get any news, I shall let you know. Sharing the stage with people you love is so special. I'm lucky to have such a talented, badass pal.

That's enough corniness for now!

I look forward to seeing you at the Parlor Room ON SUNDAY. (already?!)

Ponybird, Bunnies and Modest Quarters

So this past, hot as balls Wednesday found me in New Haven, CT, reuniting with my old friend Ponybird for a show at Cafe Nine. For the sake of tradition, we stopped at our favorite, hole in the wall, Thai place which just happens to be next to a Karaoke bar. Sadly, as we spent a very long time shoving our faces full of noodles, we didn't have time to stop. PB captured this "super" moment with her cellular device.

I kicked off the night with a set of originals, mostly new tunes, which always feels good. There were badass lights and the sound was AWESOME. Kudos, soundman. If you play at Cafe Nine, you will HEAR YOURSELF. I recommend it. I also enjoyed a Sea Hag, from New England Brewing Company. Solid IPA. Rock on.

Next up was a duo called Belle Of The Fall, which was fronted my Julia Autumn Ford on guitar and lead vocals. And holy shit, the only way I can describe her voice to you is if fairies and cotton candy lived in a fishbowl together. Her voice was the perfect amount of syrupy sweet softness blended with PERFECT control. Tracy Walton was on upright bass, which was totally awesome. They performed mostly Julia's original tunes, my favorite of the bunch being "Diamonds In The Rough." The duo also covered, "Evangeline," which melted my heart. Buy Julia's album here. Check out Belle Of The Fall here.
Picture
Ponybird concluded the set with a night of originals backed by what she called her "family band." Behind PB was her husband on drums and her father on bass. I have never seen PB full band before, and getting to see her with people she cares about so much was truly special. Their set was so beautiful and tight, and the energy between them translated into absolute magic. PB played songs off of latest release, "Modest Quarters," including "In The Threads," and "Tender Trap." Fuck, Ponybird puts every ounce of her soul into her music, which is so refreshing. There was never a moment where I went to check my phone, had the urge to step outside of talk to anyone. All I wanted to do was be present in her performance. She is so captivating. PB gave me a copy of her album, which I fell so in love with. Here is what I thought of it:

The album begins with strumming in 3/4 and Ponybird's beautiful howling voice, "You were not in your room when I needed you," and so I close my eyes to take in the story. The songs is called "In The Threads." The tune tells a story of devotion. Holy shit, there are so many beautiful, poetic lyrics in this tune, it's so hard to pick which resonates with me the most. Throughout all of the songs on the album, PB spins poetic, beautiful lyrics and often times speaks simply and bluntly as well. And I think as she sings "I wait for you," at the end of the song, she ties a ribbon around the story and leaves the listening feeling like they can safely continue on the journey that is "Modest Quarters."

Next is "Love & Wanted," which tells the story of a lover's promise to be there and stay true using the metaphor of a commit. The track utilizes very sparse guitar, cool weird noises, something that sounds like strings and very very subtle percussion to give the illusion that the listener is on an intergalactic journey, traveling through space. PB sings, "I am like a commit in the sky, shining bright for you. Go outside and look for my tonight, I will keep me word." Beautiful.

"Infamously" is one of my favorite tracks on the album. In my mind, this is the story of facade and the misleading bright lights of entertainment industry success. She also paints a picture of an abusive relationship. She sings "Infamously, only room for the vain ones." As she sings "Only room, only room...." at the end of the song, I get fucking chills. The sax action happening throughout the track is wonderfully executed. Sexy.

Next is "Start Of It," which took me by surprise. As soon as the pedal steel came in, I found myself squealing with glee. An old school country love song with awesome lyrics, guest vocals from a mystery man (I will go look at the album liner notes and post in the comments who it is!) pedal steel but only HINTS of twang in the vocal. This song reminds me so much of Conor Oberst's transition to more of an Americana feel in his solo project and how its the same, signature, warbling vocals but with beautiful, country tinged, instrumentation. This is a beautifully written tune. She sings  "I'll always be the place where you can land." Throughout the album, I grow more and more impressed with how Ponybird can't really be describes as any one type of genre, and truly gives us a little bit of everything.

"Tender Trap" comes next, which begins with a really cool surfy sounding guitar. PB tells the story of what would seem to be an affair. She expresses a sense of vulnerability, self-awareness and honestly.

"Let Something Fall Apart" follows. I really like this tune because it showcases all of the reasons I fell in love with Ponybird's music in the first place; her howling vocals, her genre defining sound, her POETRY and her ability to put together an all around get track, in studio and live. This track has incredible, Neil Young-esque backing vocals, a really cool 70's sounding rock guitar and a little twinge of country.

"Thief" follows, which immediately brought me int a trance with it's minor-ness and creeping scraping steel noises in the back. Then, out of nowhere, the chorus comes around with a beautiful major chord and I am suddenly brought back to Earth. This is a ballad of heartbreak. As she sings, "I was the wire...come back to me," my heart breaks and crumbles into little fucking pieces on the floor. Conviction.

The album ends with a tune called "Favorite Season," which I think perfectly captures the real sides of love; the uncertainty, the bittersweet acknowledgment of reality and heartbreak. The magical thing about this song is it initially starts very paired down, which took me aback, as the majority of this record is jam packed with awesomeness, but after a few seconds of just guitar, vocal and shaker, more and more madness occurs. Wailing screaming backing vocals, horns, strings and mystery noises until a giant waterfall of sund cascades into the speakers and then...Poof. Fin.

Ponybird's live performance as well as her studio album, showcase a performer who puts it all on the table 100%, writes brilliant, beautiful lyrics and really can't be defined to one genre. Love you Ponybird. <3
