Shmalentines Day

I had the absolutely pleasure of spending my Valentines Day surrounded by music & friends!

I woke up way too early Saturday morning and headed to my sweet Madeline's house. If this is your first time reading this blog, Maddie is the fearless front woman of the band Street Change, who also happens to be my best friend. We decided to record a very cute cover video to promote our show at the Rendezvous on February 28th. We love old country music so we chose to cover "I Can't Help It," by Hank Williams. Expect corny, cuteness.

I'm all about  girl power; that's no secret. So when my NYC based gal pal, Katelyn Richards was coming to town, naturally we had to set up a show together. Katelyn and I met a few months back when we both had sets at Upper Valley Music Festival here in Franklin County. I caught the last half of her set with her absolutely KILLER band and purchased her cd. It has sense become a permanent fixture in my Ford, and I am slowly becoming a fan girl.

The thing I love about Katelyn is her grunge rock sound. If I had to drop names, I would have to say she is a cross between a female Eddie Vedder, Alanis Morrissett of course, as well as some little bits of indie that keep her sound fresh, but respectively hinting at a 90's vibe. The thing that makes her different from all of the moody nineties ladies is her awesome sense of humor, which comes across in her music and her personality. I love her. You should too.

She released her album, "Have Yours Too," in 2012. When one opens their copy of "Have Yours Too" they are greeted by pink zebra print all over the disc. I love all of the songs, but the ones that spoke to me in particular were the opening track, "Around the Corner," because of its super catchy chorus and the very cool, mystical sounding intro. I also love "Hey, Have Your Too." Very catchy, wonderful imagery. "Yours Forever" the concluding track on the album, is a very clever, funny love song about being an enabler. Her sense of humor really shines through on this song. She is a lean, mean sass machine and you can learn more about her by clicking here.

We decided to co-bill at one of my favorite coffee shops here in the valley, The Thirsty Mind. I love the Mind because they have a lovely, old upright piano. A few of the keys stick and she's very heavy, but she's got character and moxy, so I chose to leave my Yamaha at home. The Thirsty Mind has an awesome wine selection, as well as delicious fancy coffee/tea drinks. I recommend you try their London Fog.

It was a VERY snowy evening. "Flakes of impending doom" fell rapidly upon us as we loaded in our gear. Despite the shitty weather, we have a great turnout. It was great to see so many friends!

Katelyn and I divided the evening into two half hour sets a piece. Katelyn joined me in a very impromptu version on "Goodnight Irene." I sang harmony on Katelyn's original song, "Hey, Have Yours Too." We had an absolutely blast and will be reuniting in the future FOR SURE.

I've got many exciting shows coming up this winter/spring! I'll be embarking on a mini tour this weekend, heading to Vermont and Rhode Island. On Thursday, February 26th I'll be reuniting with Vinnie Pagano for a show at Plan B Burger in Springfield. The 28th, I'll be at the Indoor Music Festival at the WWII club during the day and at the Rendezvous with Street Change in the evening.

March has me very busy! I'll be embarking on another multi-state mini tour with date confirming still in the works. I'll also be at the Iron Horse with super funky Jesse Dee on March 26th! I just got tickets in and if you would like one, please shoot me an email at lexiweege@yahoo.com or just hit me up on some other social media platform!

Good Morning!
I hope you're all staying warm! Only one more month of this garbage and spring WILL  BE HERE. I've been hard at work booking several tours for the warmers months & praying to all of the gods that my little ford focus will make it through the winter. I remain hopeful.

This past Sunday, I headed into the studio to record a few songs that will eventually be pressed to a 7"! I arrived at Northfire Studios around 10 am that morning and we began setting up right away. I was greeted by Garrett Sawyer, who would be behind the board for our session. He is an absolutely awesome dude and I highly recommend working with him! I walked into the control room and laid eyes on the most beautiful piece of machinery: The Tape Machine. She was gorgeous.

I walked into the live room, where cables and recording paraphernalia were being scattered about by a few interns. Zach was testing out a few different drums and Nate was tuning up his bass. I have been playing with Zach for a few years now. It all started when we were preteens, teaching each other Pearl Jam songs in my living room at age 12, to various bar bands and eventually harassing him to play in my band at the end of last year. Zach is a rock and roll drummer to the core, and I felt that he would give my songs a little oomph. He had never been in the studio before, much to my surprise, and agreed to join me for the session. Zach plays in an AWSOME band called Cold Shot, which if you still haven't seen them play, you are SERIOUSLY missing out.

I wanted to really capture the perfect retro feel for this session, and what better way than with upright bass! I put the word out that I was looking for the perfect bass player a few months before the session and just hoped someone would come my way. It wasn't until Christmastime, when I was at Theodore's Blues Bar in Springfield for a Maxxtone show that my good pal T-Bone mentioned that the bass player studied jazz for a number of years and played a 100+ year old upright. We spoke briefly after the show and I got very good vibes from Nate Fay. A few weeks later, I gathered the boys in my mom's living room and we started rehearsing for the session!

The soundcheck took about an hour. We played through the songs a few times as well as a few Led Zeppelin tunes. Once we were ready, we started rolling and didn't stop for a few hours…

Authenticity is very important to me as an artist. So I chose to record completely live and onto tape. What you track is what you get with this method. You don't go back and edit shit out. I love putting on an old album, hearing it crackle, and feeling as though the band is right in the room with you. There is magic. I hope to achieve that kind of sound with this record.

I'm not quite ready to reveal what songs will be going on this mystery 45, but I can say that the boys did an AWESOME job on the session. Garrett was great to work with, as were all of the interns and assistants. It takes a few months for vinyl to come off the presses, and I will announce the release date very soon!

As with the last album I did, Josh came along to document our adventure with his old Minolta film camera. I can't wait for the film to be developed! He also brought along the digital and got some photos as well as some video that I will post closer to the release!

It was a long day for sure, but a great one at that. I've got a shit ton of shows coming up with a bunch of amazing musicians, including Street Change, Katelyn Richards, The Woman Songwriter Collective and Shanta Paloma in the spring. Plenty to keep me busy until I have to deal with the stress of planning a release. I'm not one for planning things, I get distracted. But I am hoping to make this release a special one. I'll let you know whats going as soon as I do!
